Many of us are asking: “What can I do?” We may feel helpless because we are so far removed geographically from Haiti, an island nation located 300 miles south of the tip of Florida. Yet, there is so much we can do:

1)
Pray.  Pray for those still trapped in the rubble. Pray for those who have lost everything. Pray for families that still do not know the status of their loved ones. Pray for those who are grieving. Pray for the relief workers for strength and safety.

2)
Be aware of the magnitude of the situation. Many estimates place the death toll as high as 200,000. The Katrina death toll was around 4,000. United Methodist Early Response teams were on the ground several weeks after Katrina. Due to the enormity of this disaster it will take significantly longer for volunteer teams to be allowed in the destruction area. According to Barbara Tripp, an UMCOR consultant, volunteers are encouraged to wait until conditions are safe for entry and the mission is defined. UMCOR is regrouping in the Dominican Republic at present in preparation for their long term volunteer response. Once the emergency phase has passed, we will be ready for action. As soon as we are aware of volunteer opportunities, we will inform you.

3)
Respond as you are able.  UMCOR is continuing to mobilize its resources in cooperation with its partners. There are several avenues through which you can help:

4) Please DO NOT plan to send Clothes…instead, have a local yard sale and give the proceeds to the UMCOR advance or to help sponsor a team.

Note: All items sent must be new!
Health kits provide basic necessities to people who have been forced to leave their homes because of human conflict or
natural disaster. Health kits are also used as learning tools in personal hygiene, literacy, nutrition and cooking classes. When people gain the knowledge and materials to maintain personal hygiene, their overall health improves
