Becoming Disciples Through Bible Study
|
What is the Purpose of DISCIPLE I? The purpose of DISCIPLE is to develop strong Christian leaders through regular in-depth study of Scripture. Disciple-making and Christian nurturing are its goals. DISCIPLE participants are neither required to be nor expected to become Bible scholars. Rather, they are committed Christians who want to grow in their relationship with Jesus and His Church. What is the content of DISCIPLE I? DISCIPLE I is a 34-week course (about 9 months) in which you read approximately 70% of the entire Bible from Genesis through Revelation. Weekly lessons are centered around a different theme. Equal time is spent in each of the Old and New Testaments. What is the format of DISCIPLE I? Each student receives a study manual that contains a daily Bible reading and study assignment. Individuals meet together as a group once each week for 2 1/2 hours throughout the course. A trained leader guides the weekly group meetings which include a video presentation by various pastors and seminary professors as well as depth study of selected scripture passages. It is important to note that group leaders are not to be understood as teachers! Rather, leaders are fellow group members who have responsibility for helping the group work together. Each member must come to the group prepared to participate. It is also important to note that DISCIPLE groups are just that--groups--not classes. Groups that START together STAY together throughout the course. If you miss your scheduled group meeting time you cannot "drop-in" on another group. This closed atmosphere helps groups develop an open, trusting, sharing and caring relationship. Finally, DISCIPLE groups are "covenant" groups. That is, members agree ("covenant") to place preparation for and attendance at weekly meetings as a priority in their personal schedules. DISCIPLE graduates shall attend a minimum of 28 group sessions. How much does DISCIPLE cost?
$35.00 per person covers the cost of the study manual and other related materials. Couples may not share manuals. This fee is due at the time of registration and enrollment is not secured until payment is received. Please make checks payable to DISCIPLE LIT. *Note: Limited scholarships are available upon private consultation. Contact Kenna Sapp @ 928-1148 for confidential scholarship assistance. When do groups meet?
A variety of groups are always offered in order to accomodate as many people as possible. Times vary from year to year based on leadership availability and group consensus. What about my children?
Free childcare is available for children ages birth - 8 years while parent(s) are meeting in a DISCIPLE group. Unsupervised children of any age will not be allowed. How can I join a group? New groups are formed annually in August for September start. Group sizes are limited and are filled on a "first-come" basis. Please call Bobbi in the church office to register and make arrangements for payment. |
